GP Training

GP Registrars

GP Registrars are placed with the Surgery for a periods of either 6 months, 12 months or 18 months and will complement the existing healthcare team.

GP Registrars are Doctors who have undertaken their medical training and worked in hospital settings who are now undertaking specialist training in general practice.

We ask for your co-operation in this essential part of their education. They are fully supervised and responsible to us.

A typical programme for registrars is as follows

Induction period for first 2 weeks - includes sessions with:

District nurse

CPN

Counsellor

Practice Manager

Reception

Treatment Room Nurses

Sitting in with trainer for training surgeries

Tutorials

After 2 weeks registrars start to see their own patients - they are started at 4 per surgery and gradually build up in their own time.

We feel that having two registrars within the practice enhances the learning process.  There is the opportunity to attend twice as many tutorials.  Learning with another registrar is both stimulating, supportive and fun.

Foundation Year 2 Doctors

These doctors are part of new programme of training for doctors.  They are different to registrars although they are fully registered doctors.  They are not learning to be a GP but are at the practice for 3 or 4 months in order to gain experience in general practice including exposure to acutely ill patients.  This will lead to them achieving required competencies for the foundation programme.

Medical Student Teaching

Medical students from the Royal London and St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical Schools come regularly to spend time at the practice in order to gain experience in general practice and basic medical and clinical skills. Nursing students from the local nursing or midwifery schools may also be present.

We realise that the initial reaction of many patients may be a feeling of uneasiness if medical students are present during a consultation. However, all present students are the doctors and nurses of tomorrow and it is important that they obtain experience. They are all aware that anything they see or hear is totally confidential. You will always be informed prior to your appointment if students are present. They will not be present during your consultation if you so wish.
